About Instituto Canoa

We are a non-profit organization established in 2017 to support high-quality teacher education programs for public school teachers, with a focus on equitable learning and participation in the classroom. We work in partnership with the Lemann Center at Stanford, higher education institutions and school districts to implement PED Brasil, an in-service teacher education program offered to public school teachers in various locations across the country.

Principles that underpin
our work

High-quality education must address issues of equity.

We believe that an excellent education cannot exist without being an education for equity and social justice. Therefore, an excellent education must necessarily consider local contexts and be anti-racist, feminist, ableism and anti-LGBTQIA+phobia.

The teaching profession advances through dialogue between research and practice.

We seek strategies that have been rigorously tested and documented, and we adapt them while recognizing the specificities of each context.

We value humble and questioning attitudes and see theory and practice in a constant dialogue.

We learn best in communities.

We view the school and the classroom as social systems, where relationships and connections are the foundation for individual and collective growth.

We believe in the power of creating learning communities and school culture that fosters meaning and belonging.

Education is a vector for reducing social inequalities. Education can and should promote equity and social justice.

Our pursuit of equity begins within the classroom itself, through practices that promote the participation of all students and provide access to highly complex content. Students are resources for each other and mutually benefit when they interact in discussions, peer feedback, and group work.
