PED Brazil
The Teaching Specialization Program (Programa de Especialização Docente – PED Brasil) is a lato sensu graduate course in Mathematics or Natural Sciences (STEM) education for teachers in Elementary, Middle and High School. Teachers who complete the program are awarded an especialização degree (specialization).
An initiative of the partnership between the Lemann Center at Stanford and Instituto Canoa, the program is coordinated by Professor Rachel Lotan, former director of the Stanford Teacher Education Program (STEP). The course is offered by higher education institutions in collaboration with municipal and state departments of education in different regions of Brazil.
The PED Brasil curriculum is inspired by the principles of STEP and adapted to the Brazilian context. It is rooted in years of research on the characteristics of high-quality teacher education programs and effective pedagogical practices. The program consists of ten courses that include lessons, assignments, readings, and classroom activities that emphasize the connection between theory and practice.
The PED Network
22 institutions are part of the program network. Upon joining the network, the participating institutions also contribute to the program’s design and institutional governance.
