High-quality teacher education
must be a network endeavor

Instituto Canoa is a non-profit organization built to support high-quality teacher education programs aimed at public school teachers.

We work in partnership with schools, universities and districts based on three pillars of action:

EDUCATION PROGRAMS

We develop teacher education programs with university professors and K-12 teachers, focusing on equitable learning in the classroom.

KNOWLEDGE PRODUCTION AND DISSEMINATION

We work to ensure that teachers have access to the best practices and scientific knowledge base on teaching and learning available in Brazil and worldwide.

NETWORK AND PUBLIC POLICIES

We contribute to the improvement of public policies for teacher education.

PED Brazil

The Teaching Specialization Program (Programa de Especialização Docente – PED Brasil) is a specialization degree in teaching mathematics or natural sciences (STEM) for teachers in K-12 education, offered by a network of higher education institutions across Brazil.

The program is developed in partnership between the Lemann Center at Stanford and Instituto Canoa, and was inspired by the principles of the Stanford Teacher Education Program (STEP).

Science and Math
summer camp

In partnership with the local non-profit Associação Amigos de Maylaski, we conduct science and mathematics summer workshops with students from public schools in the district of São Roque, São Paulo, Brazil.

Through creative, open, and engaging activities, the camp contributes to enhancing students’ self-efficacy and learning in science and mathematics.

Classroom resources

We develop mathematics activities aligned with the Brazilian common core standards (Base Nacional Comum Curricular, BNCC) for group work that stimulates interaction, investigation, and creativity among students. Our approach assumes that all individuals are capable of learning and doing mathematics at high levels.
